Searching for Diasporic Indigenous Identity

Seeds in the Wind is a multidisciplinary performance exploring what it means to carry Indigenous identity across places, generations, and changing landscapes. Rooted in my experience as an Ainu artist living between Japan and Norway, the work asks how culture travels—and what remains, transforms, or takes root along the way.

Created for Bodø 2024 in Norway, the performance brings together Ainu music, Sámi yoik, shadow play, contemporary jazz, and dance in collaboration with Sámi musician and composer John Kåre Hansen. Through movement, light, sound, and visual storytelling, we create a space where different Indigenous artistic traditions could meet, resonate, and create something new.

Like seeds carried by the wind, Indigenous stories and identities can travel far from their ancestral lands. They may settle in unfamiliar places, grow in unexpected ways, and become part of new landscapes—while remaining connected to where they began.
